The Green, Widecombe in the Moor, Dartmoor National Park

The Green is the focal point of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Surrounded by shops, cafes, pub, church and its associated buildings, the village green is a great place to relax after a wander.

A local information board provides a historical perspective. 'The Village Green was once known as 'butte park' - the word 'butt' confirming its earlier use for archery practice. In 1466 an Act of Parliament laid down that every Englishman must have a bow of his own height and take to the butts on every feast day or face the penalty of one half-penny. The trees growing here include horse chestnut, copper beach and sycamore.'
