Longaford Tor, Two Bridges, Dartmoor National Park

Longaford Tor is a big, impressive rocky outcrop that rises above Wistman's Wood National Nature Reserve on the edge of Dartmoor National Park's high north plateau. The views from Longaford Tor are spectacular so, given that the tor is very easily accessible, we'd very much recommend visiting. The tor is roughly 3 kilometres north of Two Bridges and Two Bridges Hotel so it's not a demanding walk. We've positioned Longaford Tor on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit, start from the car parking area across the road from Two Bridges Hotel. Follow the good path north to the famous high altitude oak woodland in Wistman's Wood National Nature Reserve. From there, it's a short, sharp hike up the valley wall to Longaford Tor. It's a huge rocky outcrop. Climb to its top. On a clear day, the views are huge. To return, head south down the broad ridge to Littaford Tors before descending to the car parking area from where you started. Refer to the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map or the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map for detail.

It's also fun to walk in on the Lichway/Lych Way from Bellever Forest to Longaford Tor. If you are coming by car, leave your vehicle at one of the car parking areas in Bellever. Follow the Lichway/Lych Way through the disused gunpowder mills to the edge of the high plateau. Yomp up to Longaford Tor.

From the top of Longaford Tor, you'll see other rocky outcrops scattered across Dartmoor's north plateau. Beyond Bellever forest and the National Park's central bowl is Dartmoor's south plateau and its highest point at Ryder's Hill. The chimney of the disused gunpowder mills is below to the east. The wonderful Beardown Tors rise across the West Dart River valley to the west. You are close to the edge of the British Army's Merrivale Range. If the army is training, you'll see red flags flying. It's also likely you'll hear gunfire echoing across the valley.
