Whiddon Down, Dartmoor National Park

1. Stone Lane Gardens.

2. Visit the National Trust's Castle Drogo. In the local area, also visit the National Trust's Finch Foundry and Lydford Gorge.

3. Discover Dartmoor's prehistory. Spinster's Rock, Scorhill Stone Circle, Cosdon (The Cemetery) Stone Row and the Nine Maidens Stone Circle are within easy reach.

4. Walk the magnificent Teign Gorge. Lunch at Fingle Bridge Inn which is by the north bank of the River Teign at the local beauty spot Fingle Bridge.

5. Explore Chagford.

6. Walk the moors and tors of this part of Dartmoor National Park. Try Kestor Rock, Cosdon Hill, Meldon Hill and Blackingstone Rock.

7. Drop down to Moretonhampstead and then cross the moors to Postbridge and Princetown.

8. Spend a day at Okehampton. Visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life and English Heritage's Okehampton Castle.

9. Head west to the North Cornwall coast. We'd also recommend the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which borders the western side of the National Park.

10. Day trip to Exter and the South Devon coast.
