South Tawton, Dartmoor National Park

1. Lunch at the Seven Stars Inn across the road from the Church House and South Tawton St Andrew's Church.

2. Visit the National Trust's Finch Foundry, Castle Drogo and Lydford Gorge. Cotehele House, Buckland Abbey, Saltram House and Antony House are a little further away.

3. Discover Dartmoor's prehistory. See the Nine Maidens Stone Circle near Belstone and Cosdon (The Cemetery) Stone Row on the flank of Cosdon Hill.

4. Walk the north moor and stand on top of some of its tors. Wander along Belstone Ridge to Oke Tor and Steeperton Tor. The views from Cosdon Beacon on top of Cosdon Hill are well worth the yomp.

5. Explore Belstone Cleave.

6. Enjoy some of the National Park's outdoor activities. Go horse riding. Cycle the Granite Way. Mountain bike the army roads running south of Okehampton Camp.

7. Visit Chagford and the surrounding area. Spend an afternoon at Stone Lane Gardens. The Teign Gorge and Fingle Bridge are superb.

8. Discover Okehampton. Highlights include English Heritage's Okehampton Castle and the Museum of Dartmoor Life.

9. Day trip to Exeter.

10. Head west to the North Cornwall coastline and south west to the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
