Moortown, Dartmoor National Park
Wonderful location on the western side of Dartmoor National Park.
Why holiday or weekend break in or around Moortown?
1. You can wander out from Moortown on to the moor around Pew Tor. The views are exceptional. Some of the National Park's most impressive tors are in the local area. Great Staple Tor is a favourite with photographers.
2. Moortown is also situated near one of Dartmoor's most famous prehistoric sites. English Heritage's Merrivale is essential visiting.
3. If you want to get active, go mountain biking on the Granite and Gears Princetown and Burrator Route. Drake's Trail is superb. Try horse riding and climbing as well.
4. Spend a morning at Princetown's National Park Visitor Centre. The Prison Museum is a fascinating place. Grab a bite to eat at Fox Tor Cafe.
5. Burrator Reservoir is a remarkably beautiful place. Great for a picnic. You can walk, or ride a bike, around the reservoir or summit one of the tors that ring the water.
6. Tavistock is just down the road from Moortown. Part of a rare UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's a superb place. From Tavistock, explore the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Highlights include Morwellham Quay, the National Trust's Cotehele and the Tamar Trails Centre.
7. Visit the National Trust's Buckland Abbey. Other National Trust properties in the area include Lydford Gorge, Saltram House, Antony and the Dewerstone.
8. Moortown is located by the B3357 that cuts across the heart of Dartmoor National Park. Experience Two Bridges and Postbridge.
9. Plymouth is just south on the A386. It's packed with top visitor attractions. The National Marine Aquarium is a must.
10. It's a shortish drive down to the South Devon coast. The Wembury area is impressive. If you don't mind the travel, Bigbury-on-Sea and Salcombe are amazing places. You can also pop across the border into Cornwall. Whitsand Bay is sublime.
