Dartmoor's tors
Langstone Cottage is located by some of Dartmoor National Park's most dramatic tors. Pew Tor is a short walk away. Great Staple Tor and Great Mis Tor are unmissable.
Dartmoor's prehistory
The B3357 cuts across the National Park. Just up this road from Langstone Cottage is Merrivale. This is internationally famous for its prehistoric attractions. Once you've seen the stone rows, circle and standing stone, head to Princetown National Park Visitor Centre to learn about Dartmoor's prehistory. If this is of interest, we'd also recommend visiting Postbridge National Park Visitor Centre.
Mountain biking
Mountain biking on Dartmoor. Hire bikes in Princetown and enjoy one of the National Park's 'Granite and Gears' routes. There's the old Princetown Railway route or the more demanding Princetown and Burrator route.
Burrator Reservoir
Burrator is a stunning reservoir surrounded by impressive tors. Walk around the reservoir and yomp to the top of Sheeps Tor, Leather Tor and Sharpitor.
Tavistock
Tavistock is just west of Langstone Cottage. In additon to being a thriving Dartmoor gateway town packed with shops and places to eat and drink, it's also part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site relating to the Westcountry mining heritage. There are a tiny number of these globally important sites in the UK. Also look out for Tavistock Abbey ruins and the statue of Sir Francis Drake who was born on the outskirts of the town.
Drake's Trail
There's a fantastic multi-use trail named after Drake that runs between Tavistock and Plymouth. Bring your bikes and cycle Drake's Trail.
National Trust properties
When famous and rich, Drake bought Buckland Abbey which is now managed by the National Trust.
Other National Trust properties in the area include Lydford Gorge and Saltram House.
English Heritage
In addition to these National Trust properties, visit English Heritage's Lydford Castle and Okehampton Castle.
The heart of Dartmoor National Park
Because Langstone Cottage is situated near the B3357, it's easy to drive or cycle into the heart of Dartmoor National Park. See the Postbridge Clapper Bridge and wander to the top of Bellever Tor which is known for its fantastic views.
