Leather Tor, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Leather Tor, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

If you're familiar with the mountains of Snowdonia National Park, Leather Tor is a miniature version of the superb Tryfan. A fin of rock rising steeply from the surrounding moorland, Leather Tor is great for a scramble. It also offers immense views of Burrator Reservoir and Dartmoor's south moor.

We've positioned Leather Tor on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit for the first time, we'd recommend approaching from the north. The moorland south of the tor is covered by ferns and surface rock and can be difficult to walk.

Start from one of the car parking areas on the B3212 below Sharpitor. There's usually an ice cream van in one of the areas on a hot day. Walk to Sharpitor and drop down to Leather Tor. Alternatively, wander through the prehistoric settlement, field system and hut circles direct to Leather Tor. You can walk/scramble the ridge of the tor. It's not big but, clearly, take care.
