Stannon Tor from Postbridge Walk, Postbridge, Dartmoor National Park
Start at the large car park in Postbridge. Head east on the side of the main road over the bridge such that you are on the right hand side of the East Dart River. Follow the path north. It doglegs by the large house and wood at Hartyland (see the Ordnance Survey OL28 Dartmoor map for detail). You are at the foot of a steep bank that leads to Hartland Tor and have two choices.
Either head straight up to the summit of Hartland Tor or continue north west and then north on the path by the river.
If heading straight up to Hartland Tor, from its summit walk north on the flat ridge. To the north east, you'll see 'The Sheepfold' stone enclosure beneath Stannon Tor. Head for that stone enclosure then walk the hill through the granite clitter to Stannon Tor summit.
The views of the Heart of Dartmoor are wonderful. You'll see Great Mis Tor and Bellever Forest, Bellever Tor and Corndon Tor. Hamel Down is to the east. You'll see the southern moors on the horizon and Fernworthy Forest to the north east.
Trace your steps back to Postbridge.
If you want to use the alternative route by the river, follow the path north west then north from Hartyland and then trend east to 'The Sheepfold' when you are level with it. Again, head to Stannon Tor summit and then retrace your steps.
