Okehampton Camp to Okement Hill and Steeperton Tor Circular Walk, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park
A long but easy yomp, the Okement Hill and Steeperton Tor Circular Walk takes advantage of army roads and tracks in the high moors of North Dartmoor. The views are spectacular, especially if you catch early or late evening light.
First, the army train here so check if the ranges are open to the public. *Do not* walk here if the red flags fly.
Drive to Okehampton. From there, follow signs to Okehampton Camp. From Okehampton Camp, tarmac roads lead into the high moors. For this walk, drive over the wooden bridge/ford at Moor Brook and take the road which runs to the east of East Mill Tor. Drive as far as you can and then park by a military building on the fringe of East Okement Farm. We have geo-located this on the map provided. You will see a sign that says unauthorised vehicles are forbidden beyond this point. The road beyond this deteriorates so it's essential to park here.
You will see the road stretching out in front of you. Follow it to the horizon, over a ford, and up the hill, until you turn hard right (west) onto Okement Hill. The views of the high moors from here are superb.
On Okement Hill, the road switches back on itself and turns into a track. Follow this around towards Steeperton Tor and Steeperton Gorge.
We'd recommend summiting Steeperton Tor for its 360 views or North and East Dartmoor before heading down to the ford in Steeperton Gorge.
From there, the track leads to Oke Tor. Follow the ridge line towards Belstone Tor. A well marked path drops down into the valley connecting you to the tarmac road where you parked.
