Meldon Woods Bluebell Circular Walk, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

Meldon Woods Bluebell Circular Walk, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

This is one of the most impressive stretches of bluebell woodland we've experienced in Dartmoor National Park. Roughly speaking, the bluebells are thick between Meldon Viaduct and the car parking area on the west side of the woods. We can't recommend this area highly enough to bluebell fans.

There are many ways you can access the woods. For example, you can drop down from the Granite Way at Meldon Viaduct or wander across from the large car parking area at Meldon Reservoir. This walk, however, starts from the car parking area near Meldon Aplite Quarries. Clearly, to see bluebells, you'll need to visit in Spring. This usually means May on Dartmoor but check social media for up to date information.

Leave your vehicle at the car parking area near the disused quarry. Follow the road west for a short distance and you'll see a path to your right. As signposted, the path climbs towards 'Rock Park' and steps that take you to the top of Meldon Viaduct. Before you get to Rock Park and the steps leading to the top of Meldon Viaduct, the path splits. At this point, there are amazing views of Meldon Dam and the landscape surrounding the reservoir. Follow the left fork of the path down the hill. You'll see and smell the bluebells. Pass under the viaduct and follow the very distinctive path through the woods which are carpeted with bluebells beneath beach trees. Continue on the path until you see the road and another large car parking area. To your right, a much narrower and less well trodden path rises to the fence that lines the Granite Way. A track heads back east at the top of the wood. Follow it. Eventually, you'll arc back to the main path and viaduct. Return to the parking area.
