Meldon Woods, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

Meldon is a hamlet near Okehampton on the north west border of Dartmoor National Park. The local reservoir, viaduct and quarry are named after the hamlet. So too is a stretch of woodland through which the West Okement River flows. It's a beautiful place full of wildlife, flowers and local history. Most visitors heading to this area of Dartmoor walk from the car park at Meldon Reservoir up on to the high moors. If time permits, we'd also recommend heading down the valley to Meldon Woods. It's particularly impressive in Spring when bluebells are out and in Autumn when the colours turn.

We'd suggest you visit Meldon Woods as part of a circular walk. There's a car park in the woods. Follow the B3260 to Graddon Cross. There, follow the sign for Meldon Quarry. You'll see a car park on your right as you drive into the woods. Also note that there's another car parking area further down the road near Meldon Aplite Quarries. You pass under Meldon Viaduct to get to this. You can also walk in on the West Devon Way/Two Castles Trail/Dartmoor Way. Alternatively, cycle or walk in on the Granite Way. The Dartmoor Railway terminates at the eastern end of Meldon Viaduct above the woods. There are super views of the woods from the viaduct. We've positioned Meldon Woods on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.
