Moretonhampstead Public Art/Sculpture ('Dartmoor Flight'), Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor National Park

One of the highlights of Moretonhampstead is its public art/sculptures. From a sparrowhawk to Dartmoor ponies, barn owl to relief panels, the town is full of creative goodness. These beautiful works were created by a group of artists lead by Roger Dean as part of a project called 'Dartmoor Flight'.

Moretonhampstead's sparrowhawk is the centrepiece and refers to a fascinating historical event. When King John granted Moretonhampstead its charter, he requested the town pay a sparrowhawk per year as rent. Overlooking the town square, the sculpture is unmissable.

Looking up the high street from the sparrowhawk, you'll see a road branching left. Follow this and very shortly you'll find a couple of Dartmoor ponies and relief panels with information on the side of a house.

The barn owl is outside the parish hall in the shadow of the church tower. Also look out for the birds in the ironwork on the high street.
