Chat Tor, Lydford, Dartmoor National Park

Chat Tor, Lydford, Dartmoor National Park

An isolated granite outcrop on Rattlebrook Hill, Chat Tor is part of a chain of tors running down the western flank of Dartmoor National Park. Chat Tor is small in comparison to many of its neighbouring outcrops. It's also one of the furthest west of that chain so it takes a little extra effort to visit. Owing to its location on Rattlebrook Hill, it offers great views east into the heart of the National Park's north moor.

We've positioned Chat Tor on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit for the first time, start from the car parking area behind The Dartmoor Inn at Lydford. Walk along the side of the farm wall to the stepping stones and footbridge spanning the River Lyd. Follow the grass path/track between Brat Tor (Bray Tor)/Widgery Cross and Arms Tor to Dick's Well south of Great Links Tor. From there, wander across the moor to Chat Tor.

Alternatively, start at the car parking area at Lanehead up the road from Mary Tavy. Yomp up to Ger Tor and then cross the moor to Hare Tor. Pass Sharp Tor (West Dartmoor) on your way to Chat Tor.
