Hunter's Tor (Lustleigh Cleave/East Dartmoor), Lustleigh, Dartmoor National Park

The broad ridge that runs along the top of Lustleigh Cleave provides some of the best valley views in Dartmoor National Park. At the north west end of the ridge, when open access moorland drops steeply into farmland, is Hunter's Tor. The view opens out over North Bovey and the luxury hotel Bovey Castle to Cosdon Beacon and Dartmoor's highest ground. It's a magnificent place and we'd very much recommend walking the broad ridge from Sharpitor and Nut Crackers to Harton Chest to Hunter's Tor.

We've positioned Hunter's Tor (Lustleigh Cleave/East Dartmoor) on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit for the first time, start from Hammerslake on the outskirts of Lustleigh. There's parking along the side of the road. Hammerslake is marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map.

A waymarker guides you up an ancient track into woodland. The path climbs past giant granite boulders and a small cave to Sharpitor and Nut Crackers. From there, the path runs north west to Harton Chest. The views are superb from here but be very careful as there's a big drop. Continue north west and you pass from woodland into open moorland. Hunter's Tor is in front of you.

Note the weathered ditches by Hunter's Tor. These are part of Hunter's Tor Hillfort which is one of the many Iron Age hillforts that sit above river valleys fringing the high moor.

There are plenty of other routes you can take to Hunter's Tor and its viewpoint.

From the east. Walk in from Lustleigh. Take the path marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map to Pethybridge and Heaven's Gate and then yomp up to Sharpitor and Nut Crackers. Follow the above route from here. For a bigger walk, start at Drakeford Bridge and complete the Bovey Valley Circular Walk.

From the south. Start near the Kestor Inn. Drop down to Clam Bridge and then follow the path that rises steeply to Sharpitor and Nut Crackers. Continue to Hunter's Tor. From there, descend to Peck Farm and then loop around to Foxworthy Bridge. Climb to Horsham and then back up to the Kestor Inn.

Alternatively, start at the car park in Manaton. Drop down to Foxworthy Bridge and walk to Peck Farm. Climb to Hunter's Tor and then wander to Sharpitor and Nut Crackers. Descend to Clam Bridge. Struggle up the very steep path towards the Kestor Inn. Take the path north west to Horsham and then back to Manaton. As ever, consult the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail.
