Hunter's Tor Hillfort, Lustleigh, Dartmoor National Park

Zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting of the accompanying Google map and you'll see the outline of an Iron Age hillfort next to the rocky outcrop Hunter's Tor. On the ground, these earthworks are heavily weathered and are best seen when the sun is low in the sky. Winter is a great time to explore the area.

In his 'Guide to Dartmoor', William Crossing notes that 'near Hunter's Tor, is an ancient hill camp. This, and another at Water Hill, on the ridge on the further side of the valley, form part of the chain of forts referred to in our notice of the encampments above the gorge of the Teign (S. Exs. 64, 65, 66). Some miles further S. are Place Wood Camp, Boro Wood Castle Holne Chase Castle, and Hembury Castle, all of which are briefly noticed in our account of the Ashburton District'.

To visit, refer to the directions in our Hunter's Tor listing.
