To help you choose Walkers Retreat holiday let for its location, we've listed some of the local attractions below. Cherry pick for a short break. Try to visit all if you're on holiday in Dartmoor.
Dart Gorge
The River Dart rises in two areas on Dartmoor's high north plateau. These two baby rivers join at Dartmeet and the combined River Dart cuts a staggeringly beautiful gorge through the landscape. We can't recommend this place highly enough. You can walk its upper walls or drop down to the bottom of the gorge. Wild swim and bird watch for a cormorant or kingfisher. Sublime colours in Autumn. Awesome sound of water crashing through the gorge after rain.
Spitchwick (Deeper Marsh/Spitchwick Common)
This is a well known beauty spot. You can wild swim in a bend on the River Dart. To get away from the crowds head upriver to Sharrah Pool.
Walking the moors and tors of Dartmoor National Park's south plateau
The Dart Gorge is lined with tors. Bench Tor is particularly impressive. From Walker's Retreat, you can yomp up to Dartmoor's south plateau. Experience some of the National Park's famous prehistoric sites, look out for its medieval crosses and take in the splendid views. Venford Reservoir and Avon Reservoir are nearby.
Local pubs
You're spoilt for choice. The Church House Inn in Holne is a stroll away. Then there's the Tradesman's Arms in Scorriton, The Forest Inn in Hexworthy and The Tavistock Inn in Poundsgate.
River Dart Country Park
There are loads of activities in this country park just down the road from Walker's Retreat. In the local area, you can also go horse riding, rock climbing, canoeing and cycling.
Buckfast Abbey
Down on the border of the National Park is Buckfast Abbey. The story behind the building of this place is almost unbelievable. Great shops.
South Devon Railway
Take a steam train along the River Dart towards Totnes. Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies is located by the railway. There's a rare breeds farm at the Totnes end.
Heart of Dartmoor National Park
From Holne, moorland roads take you into the heart of the National Park. Visit Widecombe in the Moor, Two Bridges, Princetown and Postbridge.
