Haldon Forest Park Walking, Dartmoor, Dartmoor National Park

Whilst Dartmoor offers some of the best moorland and valley walking in the UK, it's also nice to walk in areas outside the National Park that provide big views of Dartmoor's high ground. Kit Hill Country Park in Cornwall is great to the west. Haldon Forest Park is superb to the north east.

The walks at Haldon Forest Park aren't demanding. They're well signposted. The longest are 3 miles.

We'd recommend starting with the Raptor Trail. Beginning at the main car park, this trail takes in the Belvedere Tower and the Bird of Prey Viewpoint.

Other routes are the Discovery Trail (1.5 miles), the Butterfly Trail (3 miles) and the Tree Trail (2.5 miles). We've walked all these trails with kids as young as 4 and covered a mile roughly every 30 minutes.

Note that south east of Haldon Forest Park is Mamhead. This trail is 1.5 miles long and provides extraordinary views over the Exe Estuary and South Devon coast.

We've positioned Haldon Forest Park on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. Head for the main car park and look at the walking information board or grab a leaflet from The Ridge Cafe. There are toilets by the car park.
