Luckey Tor, Dartmeet, Dartmoor National Park

If possible, buy a copy of Harvey's British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map. It was edited by the Dartmoor expert Eric Hemery and includes tracks and paths that aren't marked on the more popular and well-known Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. A couple of these tracks and paths lead to a superb tor on the northern bank of the River Dart as it flows from Dartmeet through the Dart Gorge to New Bridge. The exposed face of this tor rises vertically from a large, flat grassy area. Both Harvey and Ordnance Survey name it Luckey Tor. The walk from Dartmeet along the northern bank of the river to Luckey Tor is wonderful.

We've positioned Luckey Tor on Google maps. Zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. To visit for the first time, head for the large car parking area at Dartmeet. Walk past Dartmeet Clapper Bridge and cross the road on the northern side of Dartmeet Bridge. Follow the path as it runs pretty much along the side of the water to Luckey Tor. The river and woodland here are stunning. The other path on the Harvey map allows you to drop down from above. Note that you'll see plenty of other informal paths as you explore the area.

Time permitting, it's great fun to continue down the north bank of the Dart to the heart of the gorge. The noise can be awesome.
