South Teign River, Chagford, Dartmoor National Park

The River Teign is one of Dartmoor National Park's most beautiful waterways. It skirts Chagford and flows through the stunning Teign Gorge (National Trust) to the Teign Valley.

Study the the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map and you'll see that the River Teign rises at two places on Dartmoor's high north plateau. The North Teign Head is loacted in a hollow below Cut Hill and Whitehorse Hill. The North Teign River flows from this headwater down towards Chagford. The South Teign Head is located in a dip between Sittaford Tor and White Ridge on the western border of Fernworthy Forest. From there, it flows fast through the forest to Fernworthy Reservoir and then down to Chagford where it joins the North Teign River to form the River Teign.

Recommended places to visit, and points of interest to see, around the South Teign River include The Grey Wethers Stone Circles and the river below the reservoir dam. It's also pretty in Frenchbeer Cleave near Frenchbeer where the Mariner's Way cuts across the water.
