Salmon Leaps, Castle Drogo Weir and Drewe's Pool, Chagford, Dartmoor National Park

The River Teign flows through a spectacular and heavily wooded gorge below the National Trust's Castle Drogo. At the mouth of this gorge, between the picturesque Iron Bridge and Castle Drogo Weir, is a large pool of water which attracts fishermen, wild swimmers, photographers and walkers.

In Autumn, when the river is in spate, you'll see salmon leaping the weir as they power up to spawning grounds on the high moor. Canoeists follow the river in the opposite direction downstream into the Teign Valley. It's a particularly impressive sight in Autumn when copper trees are reflected in water.

We've positioned Salmon Leaps, Castle Drogo Weir and Drewe's Pool on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

Given this location, you can walk in from all directions. There's limited parking along the A382 by Dogmarsh Bridge and Mill End Hotel. National Trust visitors can wander down from the car parking areas at Castle Drogo. Approach from the east and the weir and pool are part of a sublime walk from Fingle Bridge and Fingle Bridge Inn. You can also wander in from Chagford or Drewsteignton on the Two Moors Way.
