Chagford
The Globe Inn is located in the centre of Chagford opposite the church. Shops and cafes are a stroll down the road. Make sure you explore the labyrinthine James Bowden & Son Hardware & Moorland Centre.
Meldon Hill
Chagford's situated in rolling countryside below two hills. Climb Meldon Hill and Nattadon Hill and the National Park's high moors, Mid Devon and Exmoor National Park reveal themselves. Meldon Hill has some of the best views in Dartmoor.
The Teign Gorge
Follow the Two Moors Way along the north bank of the River Teign north east of Chagford and you come to the mouth of the Teign Gorge (National Trust). Magnificent place.
Castle Drogo and other National Trust/English Heritage properties
At the mouth of the Teign Gorge, up to your left, is the National Trust's Castle Drogo (National Trust).
Also visit the National Trust's Finch Foundry (National Trust) and Lydford Gorge (National Trust).
English Heritage's Okehampton Castle (English Heritage) is great as well.
Prehistoric sites
Dartmoor is known for its prehistoric sites. Chagford is surrounded by an extraordinary concentration of stone rows, circles and standing stones. The highlight is Spinster's Rock.
Fernworthy Forest
At Fernworthy Forest, rolling countryside and high moorland meet a forest reminiscent of the giant plantations in Canada. Go for a walk around Fernworthy Reservoir.
High moor
Located on the edge of the high moors, Chagford's a great base for a moorland walking holiday. Head out from Fernworthy Forest or Batworthy Corner onto the high stuff.
Cycling
Cycle some of the Dartmoor Way or Granite Way. Mountain bike Fernworthy Forest or the army tracks above Okehampton. Book a horse ride out on the moors.
Stone Lane Gardens
Spend a morning or afternoon at Stone Lane Gardens and Mythic Garden Sculpture Exhibition. Castle Drogo Gardens are gorgeous as well.
The Westcountry
Use Chagford as a base to explore the Westcountry. To the east and south east, visit Exeter, the Exe Estuary, The English Riviera and South Devon. To the west and south west, experience Okehampton, the North Cornwall coast, the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Bodmin Moor.
