Belstone and West Cleave Circular Walk, Belstone, Dartmoor National Park

Use the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map in conjunction with our photographs and Google mapping.

Start at the large car parking area on the northern side of Belstone village. Given the area's popularity, you're asked to park here as a visitor. Walk into the village and take the road that climbs south west onto Watchet Hill. You are on the Tarka Trail.

Head south west with Scarey Tor, West Mill Tor, Yes Tor and the East Okement River in front of you. When the land begins to drop steeply towards the East Okement River, turn north and walk towards Old Rectory Farm. Ahead, you'll see a rocky outcrop called West Cleave Tor (West Cleave Rocks). To your left, the west, you'll see a wooden bridge spanning the river below at Chapel Ford.

We'd recommend walking to that rocky outcrop as the views over West Cleave and south to Belstone Tor, Higher Tor and Hangingstone Hill in the distance are exceptional.

Drop down to the wooden bridge and then head south to Scarey Tor. From there, trend north east to the Nine Maidens Stone Circle before crossing Belstone Common to the southern side of the village. Walk towards Belstone Church and the pub and enjoy the views of Belstone Cleave and Cosdon Hill (Cawsand Hill). From the centre of the village, walk back to the car park.
