Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, Totnes, Dartmoor National Park

Totnes is a thriving South Devon town topped with an English Heritage castle. Clearly, it's not within Dartmoor National Park. We include it on Holiday in Dartmoor because it's at the end of the South Devon Railway that runs between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. It's a great place for young kids to enjoy and learn about animals.

To visit, we'd recommend taking a trip on the South Devon Railway from the border of Dartmoor National Park. The railway follows the course of the River Dart from Buckfastleigh through Staverton to Totnes. Totnes Rare Breeds Farm is next to the platform. We've positioned the attraction on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. Note that Google's satellite imagery is a little out of date at the time of writing in September 2013.

Once you get off the train, you cross the tracks at a safe crossing place. You'll see Totnes Rare Breeds Farm in front of you. Buy your tickets from the cafe and enter the farm. It's compact which is great for young kids. Highlights from our visits include the owls and red squirrels, the goats and tiny mice. Make sure you enter the enclosures where permissible to meet the animals. There are plenty of friendly, informative staff to share their knowledge about the animals and offer guidance.
