Throwleigh Common, Throwleigh, Dartmoor National Park

Throwleigh Common, Throwleigh, Dartmoor National Park

Throwleigh is a village on the edge of Dartmoor National Park's north moor. Throwleigh Common is the name given to the moorland that rises above the village.

Village and moor are separated by a narrow road. A rocky outcrop called Shilstone Tor is a great starting point from which to explore Throwleigh Common and the high ground of Cosdon Hill and Dartmoor's north plateau beyond. It's also close to a popular local wild swimming spot called Shilley Pool and one of Dartmoor's most impressive stone rows. The views from the upper section of Throwleigh Common are magnificent. You'll see Castle Drogo and the mouth of the Teign Gorge, Chagford and Haytor Rocks behind. Fernworthy Forest is on the edge of high moorland.

We've positioned Throwleigh Common on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

There are many ways to visit Throwleigh Common. If you want to wild swim, park just north of Moor Farm. Follow the south bank of Blackaton Brook to Shilley Pool. If you want to wander up to Cosdon Beacon, you can walk from the north bank of Blackaton Brook having crossed the water at the lower ford marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. Head for Cosdon (The Cemetery) Stone Row and up the steep side of Cosdon Hill. Alternatively, park by Shilstone Tor. Head for the upper ford on Blackaton Brook as marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. Ford the water and then walk up to Cosdon Beacon on top of Cosdon Hill. You can drop down to Cosdon (The Cemetery) Stone Row and then Shilley Pool to combine all the above.
