Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Statue and Birthplace, Tavistock, Dartmoor National Park

Sir Francis Drake is said to have been born at Crowndale Farm on the outskirts of Tavistock. Whilst the existing farm buildings date from the nineteenth century, you can follow Tavistock Canal from the centre of town to Crowndale.

A bronze statue of Sir Francis Drake stands at the south western end of the A386 Plymouth Road. Cast in 1883 by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-90), there's another statue of Drake at Plymouth Hoe. The studio model can be seen up close at the National Trust's Buckland Abbey.

You can cycle from the Drake statue in Tavistock to the statue in Plymouth by following Drake's Trail.
