Great Staple Tor, Tavistock, Dartmoor National Park

Great Staple Tor, Tavistock, Dartmoor National Park

Tor/walking

One of Dartmoor's most photographed and dramatic tors, Great Staple Tor is located in the west section of the National Park where high moor sweeps down to Tavistock and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We've positioned Great Staple Tor on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

Easiest and recommended route to Great Staple Tor for the first time

Great Staple Tor is very easily accessible. Just north west of Merrivale, there are plenty of parking areas along the B3357 before the road drops down the side of the moor towards Tavistock. Perhaps the best place from which to start is the huge car park by the Tavistock View Point. Cross the road and follow the path that cuts across the old tin workings and rises to Middle Staple Tor and then Great Staple Tor. This path is marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map and is visible on Google's satellite imagery.

Views

Great Staple Tor is a mass of granite outcrops and granite stacks. The height and shape of the stacks is impressive.

The views are wonderful. To the north are Roos Tor, White Tor with Great Links Tor all the way in the distance. To the north east is Great Mis Tor and to the south east North Hessary Tor and Radio Mast and Foggintor Quarries. To the south is Pew Tor and to the west the Tamar Valley AONB and Cornwall. You'll see the Cornwall and Devon coastline too.
