Hart Tor, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Hart Tor, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

A high number of tors circle Princetown. Some, like Great Mis Tor, are dramatic. Others, like Little Mis Tor, are more understated. Hart Tor is one of the latter. A relatively small rocky outcrop, it sits on a spur of land between the upper section of the River Meavy and Hart Tor Brook about a mile south-ish of Princetown.

Hart Tor is situated by Hart Tor Stone Rows and Black Tor Stone Row. Black Tor is to the south west and Cramber Tor to the south east.

We've positioned Hart Tor on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

You can walk in from all directions. To visit for the first time, we'd suggest you follow one of the grass paths or strands across open moorland from Princetown. Start at the car park by Princetown National Park Visitor Centre. Turn left at the entrance. You'll come to a path that runs down the left hand side of a field. Dartmoor Brewery is on the other side of the field. At the end of the path, turn left and cross the B3212. Follow one of the grass paths or strands down to Hart Tor. Note that these grass paths are visible on Google's satellite imagery.

Alternatively, park on the side of the B3212 near Black Tor. Wander across the rocky outcrop and then drop down to the River Meavy. Cross the water using the metal footbridge. Explore Hart Tor Stone Rows before walking up to Hart Tor.

For a longer walk, try the Princetown, Nun's Cross and Hart Tor Circular Walk. This brings you in from the south east via Cramber Tor.

We've also approached from the car parking area at the north eastern end of Burrator Reservoir and on circular walks from Princetown initially following the trackbed of the Princetown Railway (Princetown to Yelverton Railway Dismantled). Consult the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail.

Note that the Hart Tor area can get boggy after a spell of wet weather.
