Granite and Gears Princetown and Burrator Cycling Route, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Granite and Gears Princetown and Burrator Cycling Route, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

The longer version of the Granite and Gears Princetown Railway Cycling Routes is 30km and perfect for a family trip. The Granite and Gears Princetown and Burrator Cycling Route is only 20km but is much more demanding. It follows worn paths and tracks across open moorland and is difficult in places. We avoid taking kids on this route.

Start from the car park by Princetown National Park Visitor Centre in the heart of the village. If you are on holiday in Dartmoor and haven't brought bikes then hire them from Fox Tor Cafe.

Follow the path that runs from the left of The Plume of Feathers Inn as you face it. This path passes South Hessary Tor and continues towards Nun's or Siward's Cross.

Before you reach Nun's or Siward's Cross, another path descends west to Burrator Reservoir. Take care as this path can be tricky after bad weather.

Follow the road that skirts Burrator Reservoir and cycle out to Sheepstor village. From there, the road runs to a car parking area below Gutter Tor where it connects with a path that climbs to Eylesbarrow Tin Mine. This path then passes Eylesbarrow before descending to Nun's or Siward's Cross. Again, take care as this section of the path is eroded owing to the hard weather.

From Nun's or Siward's Cross, cycle back to Princetown on the path down which you came at the beginning of the route.
