Down Tor Stone Row (Hingston Hill Stone Row), Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Down Tor Stone Row (Hingston Hill Stone Row), Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

This is arguably the most extraordinary stone row on Dartmoor. Whilst Stall Moor Stone Row is the longest in the world and Stalldown Stone Row has the tallest collection of stones, for sheer presence it's hard to beat Down Tor Stone Row (Hingston Hill Stone Row). This is essential visiting when on holiday in Dartmoor National Park.

We've positioned Down Tor Stone Row (Hingston Hill Stone Row) on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. The row is known locally as Hingston Hill Stone Row. Hingston Hill is marked on the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map but not the more popular Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map which is why we name it Down Tor Stone Row after nearby Down Tor.

The row runs, *roughly speaking*, east/west. There's what Philip Newman terms an 'encircled cairn' (on the ground it looks like a circle of stone around a burial place) at the western end. This is next to a number of tall stones that taper down and extend up a gentle moorland slope. It's a superb sight.

To visit, we'd recommend heading for the car parking area by Norsworthy Bridge at the eastern end of Burrator Reservoir. Wander up to Down Tor and then across open moorland to the stone row. Note that you can't see the row from Down Tor as it's obscured by moorland. Refer to the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail. The path leading from the car parking area at Norsworthy Bridge is marked on the map.

Alternatively, head for Nun's or Siward's Cross/Nun's Cross Farm and walk across the moor.

There's a lovely circular walk from Nun's or Siward's Cross/Nun's Cross Farm that takes in the stone row. Start from one of the car parking areas along the Princetown to Whiteworks road. Walk to Nun's or Siward's Cross. Continue up to Eylesbarrow for huge views over Dartmoor, South Devon and East Cornwall. Drop down to Combshead Tor and then across to the stone row. Follow the stone row east to Nun's or Siward's Cross and head back to where you started.
