Down Tor, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Down Tor, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Down Tor is a beautiful cluster of outcrops relatively close to the eastern end of Burrator Reservoir and Norsworthy Bridge. It offers 360 degree views of Dartmoor's western tors, south moor and sublime Burrator Reservoir. Down Tor Stone Row (Hingston Hill Stone Row), which is one of the National Park's most impressive stone rows and prehistoric sites, is nearby. The Granite and Gears Princetown and Burrator Cycling Route runs to the north.

We've positioned Down Tor on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit for the first time, follow the road that runs around Burrator Reservoir to the car parking area at Norsworthy Bridge. You'll usually find an ice cream van here in warm weather. It's also a popular place for picnics and paddling in Newleycombe Lake (a lake is a stream on Dartmoor). At the south eastern end of the car parking area, a path runs out onto the moor. It's marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. Follow that path through a system of old farm walls to Down Tor. You pass a small outcrop on your way. Down Tor is a large cone of moorland and outcrops.

Note that Down Tor Stone Row (Hingston Hill Stone Row) is hidden behind the brow of a hill to the east. If you're at Down Tor, make sure you visit it.
