Cross Gate/Lowery Cross is on both the Buckfast to Tavistock Monastic Route and the Buckfast to Buckland Monastic Route. The Dartmoor expert Eric Hemery refers to these as the 'Monastic Way: Buckfast Abbey - Tavistock Abbey' and the 'Monastic Way: Buckfast Abbey - Buckland Abbey' in his book 'Walking Dartmoor's Ancient Tracks: A guide to 28 routes'.

Hemery wrote that Cross Gate/Lowery Cross 'is unlike the rustic crosses common to Dartmoor's monastic tracks in having a slender, chamfered shaft; this replacement of the lost original - taken probably for use as a gatepost - supports the old, damaged head'.
