Cowsic Head, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park
The River Cowsic is a short river that flows into the West Dart River at Two Bridges in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. The River Cowsic rises at Cowsic Head on a very boggy section of moorland on Dartmoor's north plateau. The Cowsic Head is close to Beardown Man Standing Stone and Devil's Tor.
In the right conditions, after a spell of dry weather, walking past the Cowsic Head on your way to/from Cut Hill from/to Devil's Tor is a wonderful experience. This is some of the most remote terrain in Dartmoor and it's unlikely you'll see another human being. The area is covered with colourful grasses, moss and pools of water. However, even after a spell of dry weather, it's boggy so we wouldn't recommend walking there after rain. The rough cut moorland is also difficult underfoot.
Other rivers rise in this area. The Tavy Head/South Tavy Head and West Dart Head are located between the Cowsic Head and Cut Hill. There are plenty of other brooks and streams gathering strength in the area as well.
We've positioned the Cowsic Head on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. It's probably best viewed from Conies Down Tor. To visit the area, we'd recommend starting from the car parking area at Holming Beam and then either walking up to Conies Down Tor for that view or crossing the footbridge below Holming Beam that spans the River Cowsic and heading up past Lydford Tor to Devil's Tor if you want to walk the moorland around the Cowsic Head.
