Best Princetown Walks, Princetown, Dartmoor National Park

Princetown

Princetown is Dartmoor's high moorland town. It sits between Dartmoor's north moor and south moor and provides access to some of the National Park's best prehistory. It's also within walking distance of top visitor destinations like Burrator Reservoir. We provide recommendations for walks below.

Walking to local tors from Princetown

Spend time exploring Dartmoor and you'll see Princetown's radio mast from miles around. It's located by North Hessary Tor above Princetown and can be visited as part of a great walk. Try the Princetown, North Hessary Tor and Foggintor Quarries Circular Walk.

King's Tor is west of Princetown. Follow the trackbed of the old Princetown Railway (Princetown to Yelverton Railway Dismantled) to King's Tor. It's very easy walking. Click through on the listing for information.

Great Mis Tor is one of Dartmoor's top tors. Follow the path from Princetown as marked on Ordnance Survey mapping. Don't walk Dartmoor's high moor without a map or compass. Click on the listing for more information.

 

Walking disused quarries from Princetown

Dartmoor is famous for its granite. This was cut and transported from quarries to be used around the world. These quarries are long disused but you can explore some of them on walks from Princetown.

Again, follow the trackbed of the old Princetown Railway (Princetown to Yelverton Railway Dismantled) to both Foggintor Quarries and Swelltor Quarries and return to Princetown the way you came.

 

Walking railway routes from Princetown

If you walk the trackbed of the old Princetown Railway (Princetown to Yelverton Railway Dismantled), you're on the Granite and Gears Princetown Railway Cycling Routes. You can follow this all the way down to Burrator Reservoir.

Note that if you do walk all the way to Burrator Reservoir, you can return on a path that runs near Crazy Well Pool and then South Hessary Tor. It's a long circular walk but great fun.

 

Walking to Nun's Cross Farm and Nun's or Siward's Cross

The Jobber's Road runs from Princetown to Nun's Cross Farm and Nun's or Siward's Cross. This is a popular route from Princetown.

 

Walking to Dartmoor's ancient crosses from Princetown

The Jobber's Road takes you to one of Dartmoor's most famous crosses at Nun's Cross Farm and Nun's or Siward's Cross. Try the Princetown, Nun's Cross and Hart Tor Circular Walk.

If you want to visit large numbers of ancient crosses, try a section of the Buckfast to Tavistock Monastic Route or the Abbot's Way.

 

Walking Burrator Reservoir from Princetown

You can also follow the Jobber's Road down to Burrator Reservoir on the Granite and Gears Princetown and Burrator Cycling Route. This is a lovely circular walk.

 

Prehistoric walks from Dartmoor

Merrivale (English Heritage) is one of Dartmoor's top prehistoric sites. You can walk west of Princetown to visit these.
