West Dart Head, Postbridge, Dartmoor National Park

The River Dart rises in two places on Dartmoor's north plateau. The East Dart River rises at East Dart Head near Cranmere Pool and Whitehorse Hill. The West Dart River rises at West Dart Head near Cut Hill and Fur Tor. To help you identify the source of the West Dart River, we've positioned it on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

Many rivers and streams rise in this area of moorland so, as you would expect, it's boggy, rough cut moorland even after a dry spell of weather. It's possible to walk to Cut Hill via Devil's Tor/Beardown Man from the car parking areas at either Holming Beam or Two Bridges. However, we wouldn't recommend crossing this area after a period of wet weather as the terrain becomes treacherous.
