Challacombe Medieval Strip Fields, Postbridge, Dartmoor National Park

Stand at English Heritage's Grimspound or Hookney Tor and look south west and you'll see weathered strips of farmland on the side of a steep hill. These are Challacombe Medieval Strip Fields.

A local information board states that 'the narrow strip fields (lynchets) which you can see running along the west side of the valley were probably created by farmers in the 12th and 13th centuries. At this time Dartmoor's climate was warmer and drier than today and these lynchets maximised the ground available for grazing and then growing cereal crops.'
