West Okement Head, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park
Up on Dartmoor’s north plateau, within a short distance of each other, are the headwaters of many of the National Park’s most famous rivers. The moorland here is remote, boggy, rough cut and tussocky. Given that the headwaters are located on a plateau, it’s also possible to argue that the views are no match to those from the edge of the plateau. That said, large numbers of people trudge up to the West Okement Head area to see and experience Cranmere Pool. Its famous letterbox is situated in a depression in the moorland. It’s surrounded by the abovementioned boggy and rough cut moorland. From here, the West Okement River snakes around the northern flank of Great Kneeset and Kneeset Nose on its way to Lints Tor. Continuing down the Upper West Okement Valley, it passes Black-a-tor Copse National Nature Reserve on its way to the southern end of Meldon Reservoir.
