Okement Hill, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

Okement Hill, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

Okement Hill is remote, high moorland in the northern section of Dartmoor National Park. It's relatively easy to get to. At the southern end of the army ring road, you can walk or mountain bike up the hill using the safe, solid rough road. Okement Hill is known for its disused army observation point called OP15. It's also a great place from which to visit many of Dartmoor's more remote attractions. In the past, you could drive to Okement Hill and OP15. Today, the furthest you can drive is to OP22 by East Okement Farm. The army ring road beyond that point isn't open to public vehicles.

We've positioned Okement Hill on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit for the first time, we'd recommend heading for Okehampton and Okehampton Camp. Cross Moor Brook and drive past Rowtor and its large car parking area to OP22 and East Okement Farm. There's limited parking at this point. If you can't park there, head back towards Rowtor and start a little further back. From OP22 and East Okement Farm, follow the army ring road west or east of East Mill Tor all the way up to OP15 on Okement Hill. It's great fun then to follow the army ring road to its most southerly point and then return via Taw Ford, Steeperton Gorge and Oke Tor. From Oke Tor, drop down to the army road by East Mill Tor and wander back to where you started.

From Okement Hill, you can visit the Ted Hughes Memorial Stone, Ockerton Court and then Cranmere Pool. You can also wander across to Hangingstone Hill and then Whitehorse Hill to see the site of Whitehorse Hill Cist.
