East Hill Hillfort Circular Walk, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

This circular walk covers the northernmost section of moorland and river valley in Dartmoor National Park. It takes you past a miniature pony stud, connects with the Tarka Trail in the beautiful East Okement Valley and climbs up to an Iron Age hillfort. In Spring, it also takes you through one of the best bluebell showings on Dartmoor. You get super views of the highest ground in southern England as well as views over Okehampton to Mid Devon and Exmoor National Park beyond.

Head for the Dartmoor gateway town Okehampton. Follow the road that climbs to Okehampton Camp. There's parking on the right just before you get to the army camp. Walk back down the road and very shortly you'll see a narrow road heading east to The Halstock & Blackertor Studs. The path is marked by a broken green line on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. With a bit of luck you should see the unbelievably cute miniature ponies.

Just before the farm buildings of The Halstock & Blackertor Studs, a path heads north east and follows the north bank of Moor Brook down to where it meets the East Okement River Valley. There, it connects with the Tarka Trail. Follow that north and you come to a bridge and the A30. As marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map, you then double back on yourself and climb very steeply to the East Hill Hillfort.

From the hillfort, trend west until you get to the gate on the sharp bend of the Okehampton to Okehampton Camp road by the house known as Klondyke. Wander back up the road to your car.
