Wray Valley, Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor National Park

Wray Valley, Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor National Park

In the north eastern section of Dartmoor National Park, between, roughly speaking, Moretonhampstead and Lustleigh is the Wray Valley. Cut by Wray Brook, today the A382 runs along the valley floor connecting the east of the National Park around Bovey Tracey to the north around Chagford and Whiddon Down. Both sides of the Wray Valley are heavily wooded.

Given the number of things to do and places to see in and around the valley, we've broken this listing down into sections.

Explore Moretonhampstead. One of the major gateway towns to Dartmoor's high moors, check out Moretonhampstead's public art and historical buildings. There are plenty of pubs and cafes to enjoy.

Visit Lustleigh. One of Dartmoor's most beautiful and popular villages, Lustleigh is at the south eastern end of the valley.

Walking. Walk in Wray Cleave and Pepperdon Down. The views from the latter are superb.

Experience a section of the Wray Valley Trail. We'd recommend the section between Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey passing through the National Trust's Parke Estate.

Enjoy the bluebells in Spring. There are good showings in Wray Cleave and on Pepperdon Down. The best showing in the local area is on the other side of Moretonhampstead at Whiddon Deer Park.

Discover the reservoirs above the Wray Valley. Tottiford, Trenchford & Kennick Reservoirs are stunning places. Autumn is a particular treat.

Walk in the woods to the south east of the Wray Valley. Try the Bearacleave Wood, Shaptor Wood and Shaptor Rock Circular Walk.

Visit the local beauty spot Blackingstone Rock. The views west to Dartmoor's highest ground are magnificent.

Explore the north east of the valley around Mardon Down. Again, super views across to Dartmoor's highest ground.

Walk in Lustleigh Cleave and the Bovey Valley. Widely recognised as one of the most beautiful wooded valleys in the National Park, start from Lustleigh.

Explore Bovey Tracey and the National Trust's Parke Estate.
