Butterdon Down, Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor National Park

Butterdon Down tends to be one of those places on Dartmoor that you pass through as opposed to being a destination in its own right. Located between Fingle Bridge and Moretonhampstead, the Dartmoor Way Walking Route runs around the western and southern fringes of this small island of moorland.

The views are immense.

If you're exploring Cranbrook Castle, we'd recommend wandering across to Butterdon Down to enjoy those views. In Spring, when the wild flowers are out, the walk between Butterdon Down and Moretonhampstead is stunning.

We've positioned Butterdon Down on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit it as a destination in its own right, start from the very small parking area by Cranbrook Castle. Wander down to Cranbrook and follow the path marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map that crosses farmland to Butterdon Down. Note that if you go late in the day when the sun's in the west, the views are less sharp.
