Windypost Cross, Merrivale, Dartmoor National Park

Windypost Cross, Merrivale, Dartmoor National Park

Owing to its location, Windypost Cross is one of the most visited stone crosses in the National Park. Situated on Whitchurch Common above Tavistock and by the B3357, Windypost Cross is very easily accessible from the large car park at Tavistock View Point. It stands next to the Grimstone and Sortridge Leat. Feather Tor is to the south east.

We've positioned Windypost Cross on Google map so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To visit for the first time, follow the B3357 to the western edge of the high moor by Cox Tor. There's a large car parking area that's clearly visible on Google's satellite imagery. Merrivale is to the east. Tavistock is to the west. From the car parking area, follow the very wide grass strip that runs south east across Whitchurch Common towards Feather Tor. You'll see Windypost Cross in front of you. As you approach, you'll also see the Grimstone and Sortridge Leat. The cross is about 1km from the car parking area and is marked 'Cross' on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map.

According to the Dartmoor expert Eric Hemery, Windypost Cross is located on many ancient travel routes. These include 'Jobbers' Road, Tavistock Branch', 'Chagford - Tavistock Trans-Dartmoor Track' and Tavistock-Ashburton Packhorse Track'.
