Merrivale Quarry, Merrivale, Dartmoor National Park

In his work 'High Dartmoor', Eric Hemery writes:

'William Duke opened his Tor Quarry in 1876, its operations absorbing the old sett-making craft previously carried out under the Steeple Tors. Harris states in Industriology that granite from the quarry was supplied to Pethicks of Swell Tor Quarry in 1903 for the making of corbels for London Bridge; F.W.Hodge (Letters), however, strenuously denies this, and, as he was personally acquainted with the men who actually cut the corbels, it appears that Mrs Harris may have been misinformed on this point. The quarry is now worked by the Dartmoor Granite Company who have in recent years demolished Merrivale Cottages, built by Duke's to house their workers.'
