Tavy Cleave Tors, Mary Tavy, Dartmoor National Park

Tavy Cleave Tors, Mary Tavy, Dartmoor National Park

The River Tavy cuts the beautiful Tavy Cleave over on the western side of Dartmoor. The northern lip of the cleave, or valley, is lined with some wonderful outcrops. Ger Tor is a cluster of granite outcrops providing super views east up the valley to Fur Tor and is situated close to the tail of the cleave. Tavy Cleave Tors rise steeply and dramatically from the valley floor towards the centre of the cleave. Seen from below, by the River Tavy on the valley floor, the Tavy Cleave Tors are among the most beautiful in the National Park. Oddly, they are not marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. They are marked on the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map. You can scramble up to the top of these tors. A path also descends very steeply by the tors down to the River Tavy and the valley floor. This makes for a lovely circular walk from the car parking area at Lanehead.

We've positioned Tavy Cleave Tors on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see their location. To visit for the first time, we'd recommend completing the aforementioned circular walk. Start from the car parking area at Lanehead which is up the road from Mary Tavy. Follow the grass paths up to Ger Tor. Walk across to Tavy Cleave Tors. A path drops down from the lower tor to the River Tavy in Tavy Cleave. From there, follow the bank of the river east. You'll come to the start of a leat. A good path runs along the south side of the leat and takes you back to the Lanehead area. Leave the leat and walk down one of the grass paths to the car parking area from which you started.
