Amicombe Brook, Mary Tavy, Dartmoor National Park

You're most likely to walk along, or cross, Amicombe Brook when heading to Fur Tor and the heart of Dartmoor's north moor from the western side of the National Park. The brook rises in an exceptionally boggy valley on remote moorland between Amicombe Hill and Great Kneeset. It passes Dinger Pool and is joined by Black Ridge Brook and Cut Combe Water before widening and arcing west around the southern tip of Amicombe Hill. The River Tavy connects with Amicombe Brook and flows down to the mouth of Tavy Cleave.

Those walking to Fur Tor tend to cross Amicombe Brook at Sandy Ford. This is marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map and is just east of the area where the River Tavy meets Amicombe Brook. That said, we've been up there when the brook was impassable owing to heavy rain.
