Houndtor Wood, Manaton, Dartmoor National Park

Houndtor Wood is part of the Bovey Valley Woodlands which, in turn, are part of the East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve. Houndtor Wood is situated at the bottom of Trendlebere Down near Manaton. The River Bovey and Becka Brook run through the wood. Between them is Houndtor Ridge.

Manaton Old Road rises through the middle of the wood and crosses Becka Brook at Houndtor Wood Bridge. There's a lovely viewpoint and bench towards the top of the wood. It's a byway open to all traffic so you might see 4x4s trundling down/up the road.

A path skirts the River Bovey between Clam Bridge and the southern end of the wood. This path can be tricky to walk owing to fallen trees and slippery river banks.

The much photographed Hisley Bridge is at the bottom of Houndtor Wood.

We've positioned Houndtor Wood on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. Refer to the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail.
