English Heritage

Visit Lydford Castle (English Heritage). The inn takes its name from Lydford Castle which is next door.

 

Local history

Battle of Lydford Memorial. Look out for this memorial and the Lydford Viking Rune Stone which commemorate the 997 AD battle between the Saxons and Vikings.

Lydford St Petroc's Church. Visit for the famous Watchmaker's epitaph and the fascinating models charting the development of the church over the centuries.

Lydford The Norman Castle. Tucked away behind the church are the earthworks of The Norman Castle. Abandoned in the 12th century, this predates English Heritage's Lydford Castle.

 

National Trust

Lydford Gorge (National Trust). The most popular visitor attraction in the area, the circular gorge walk is stunning.

 

Walking

Lichway/Lych Way. If you fancy a challenge, walk the ancient Lichway/Lych Way across the high moor to the heart of Dartmoor National Park.

King Way. This is another ancient track running along the western fringe of the high moor. It connects Okehampton and Tavistock.

 

Cycling

Granite Way. Bring, or hire, bikes and cycle the Granite Way between Lydford and Okehampton. You ride over Meldon Viaduct. The views are exceptional.

 

Tors and high moor

Lydford is a great place from which to explore the western side of Dartmoor. Great Links Tor is a highlight.

Widgery Cross. As you yomp up to Great Links Tor from Lydford, you'll see a huge granite cross topping a rocky outcrop. Visit Widgery Cross.
