Holwell/Becka Brook Valley, Haytor Vale, Dartmoor National Park

Holwell/Becka Brook Valley, Haytor Vale, Dartmoor National Park

Becka Brook runs from the moor between Haytor Rocks and Widecombe-in-the-Moor down to the River Bovey by Hisley Bridge in the lower part of the Bovey Valley.

The brook can be split into three sections. The upper section flows through open moorland. The middle section is at Bovey Falls Woodland Park. The lower section is in the stunning Houndtor Wood. This listing refers to the upper section of Holwell/Becka Brook Valley and is great for walking.

Haytor Rock, Holwell Tor and Smallacombe Rocks are east of the brook. Holwell Lawn, Hound Tor and English Heritage's Hound Tor Abandoned Medieval Settlement are to the west. There's a granite footbridge below Holwell Tor and a clapper bridge downstream below English Heritage's Hound Tor Abandoned Medieval Settlement.

We've positioned Holwell/Becka Brook Valley on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.

To explore for the first time, we'd recommend starting from the car park by Hound Tor at Swallerton Gate. Wander up to the top of Hound Tor and then drop down to English Heritage's Hound Tor Abandoned Medieval Settlement. Follow the path to the clapper bridge to cross Becka Brook. Climb the path to Smallacombe Rocks and yomp across to Holwell Tor. A path takes you down to the granite footbridge. Cross the water and follow the path as it rises to Holwell Lawn. Wander back to Hound Tor and the car park.

Alternatively, start from the car parking areas by Haytor Rocks and walk the above route in the opposite direction.
