Parking And Access To Dartmoor's South Moor, Harford, Dartmoor National Park

Update 2021

Note that Harford Moor Gate car park is temporaily closed as of 2021. Click through to the listing to learn more.

The easiest way to get to Harford Moor Gate and the south moor beyond is on foot.

Start at Ivybridge and follow the Two Moors Way up onto the south moor. The Two Moors Way is clearly marked on Ordnance Survey mapping. It's easy walking.

Three sections

Look at a map of the lower section of Dartmoor's south moor and you'll see it's split into three sections. The eastern section, between the River Erme and the A38 is very easily accessible. The western side, between the River Yealm and Cadover Bridge is easily accessible. These days, the central section between the River Erme and River Yealm is much more difficult to access.

Not so long ago, you could park at New Waste (up the road from Cornwood) and walk up to the moor to see, for example, Stalldown Stone Row pictured in the main image of this listing. Since the car parking area was closed by new land owners, walkers have had to wander across from the car parking area at Harford Moor Gate or up from Cornwood (Heathfield Down)/Ivybridge or across from the car parking areas by the China Clay Workings (South Dartmoor). Locals do park along the road between New Waste and Tor but there are only a handful of spots.

If you want to access that central section of the south moor, we'd recommend walking from the car parking area at Harford Moor Gate. Drop down to Harford, turn right and cross Harford Bridge. Walk past the first gate and you'll come to another that provides access to Burford Down and Stalldown/Stall Moor. This route does get muddy however. You can also cross the River Erme from the eastern section but this depends on river levels. Walkers normally cross by Erme Pound or even further upriver near the headwaters. Sometimes it's possible to cross on boulders in the water. We'd never recommend crossing rivers like this, especially in such remote areas where the terrain is tricky. You cross rivers at your own risk.
