Round Pound, Gidleigh Park and Scorhill Stone Circle Circular Walk, Gidleigh, Dartmoor National Park

Round Pound, Gidleigh Park and Scorhill Stone Circle Circular Walk, Gidleigh, Dartmoor National Park

This is a beautiful walk in the Chagford area taking in high moor, wooded valley and some of Dartmoor's best prehistory. As ever, we'd recommend you plan this walk using the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map in conjunction with our photographs and Google mapping.

Start by Batworthy above Chagford

From Chagford, head up to Batworthy by Kestor Rock. There's a small car park at the end of the road close to Batworthy Corner. Alternatively, there are plenty of grassy parking spots on the side of the road. In summer, when the ground has been baked by the sun, a larger grassy area is opened for parking by Batworthy, too.

Round Pound

Head north east to Round Pound. There are super views to the high moors.

Walking through Gidleigh Park

From Round Pound, follow the road down across the cattle grid to the sharp bend by Teigncombe. You'll see a sign pointing down into (South) Gidleigh Park. Follow that track to the river and cross the wooden bridge. Turn right, to the north east, for about 100 yards and you'll see a track marked the Mariners' Way in Dartmoor on your left. This heads north and steep through (North) Gidleigh Park.

Scorhill Down and Scorhill Stone Circle

Follow this track until you hit the road by the village of Gidleigh. Head west to Scorhill Down. The tarmac road ends in a car park and you'll walk directly onto the moors.

Walk south west across good ground to Scorhill Stone Circle.

From there, cross Walla Brook on Wallabrook Bridge and the North Teign River via the Teign-e-ver Clapper Bridge. Divert to see the Tolmen Stone on the North Teign River.

Batworthy Corner and Shovel Down Stone Rows

Trend south east to Batworthy Corner where you parked. Note that this area has a rich prehistory. See Shovel Down Stone Rows and the Kestor Settlements and Field System.
