Wooston Castle Hillfort, Drewsteignton, Dartmoor National Park

Wooston Castle Hillfort, Drewsteignton, Dartmoor National Park

Look at the location of Wooston Castle Hillfort on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map and you'll see that it appears to occupy a strange site in woodland about half way up a valley wall in Fingle Woods (National Trust/Woodland Trust). Visit and you'll be rewarded with exceptional views west along the Teign Gorge past Prestonbury Hillfort and the National Trust's Castle Drogo (National Trust) to the high moors between Cosdon Hill (Cawsand Hill) and Hangingstone Hill. In reality, the hillfort has a superb location.

We've positioned Wooston Castle Hillfort on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. To visit, we'd recommend completing the Fingle Woods Wooston Castle Circular Walk. Note that there's also limited parking in two areas on the skinny road that runs along the southern edge of Fingle Woods. Consult the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map for further information. You'll see a road rises south west from Clifford Bridge towards a settlement called Wooston. That road splits. There's a parking area where it splits and another a little further along the road.

If hillforts are of interest, also visit Cranbrook Castle Hillfort in the local area. Above Chagford is Nattadon Hillfort.
